I was embroiled in a Twitter debate last night. A young man whose bio clearly states that he is a comedian and, in his own words, is soooo effing funny. He posted what I assumed was meant as a joke. Now, I didn’t find it funny, and I like an offensive joke, I am not easily outraged, but this ‘joke’ just wasn’t funny. Comedy like that requires intelligence as well as a quick wit and the knowledge of when to say it and when to shut the fuck up!
So, I point this out to him, I ask is this meant to be funny? Cos ya know…well no, I actually have no idea what else it could be about. And his initial response is to accuse me of being outraged…like this was his intention from the start. I don’t know about you but that isn’t comedy to me, that’s just plain mean. Maybe I’d just misread the ‘joke’, maybe there was a typo and that he wasn’t really trying to be funny about raping a severely handicapped woman…
You can read my replies Here… he has deleted all of his, I think my last replies will explain why!
He then goes on to actually explain the joke… and it’s still not funny. There is no clever twist that you have that Oh moment. Now, he is getting annoyed and still, nobody is laughing.
But the worst part, when you look on his original post and view the replies.
An author, a female author, follows it up with another rape joke and I am wondering what the hell is wrong with these people.
See, I am not outraged in the sense that they want me to be. I am not a twitter warrior that pokes about looking for anything to be upset about, but I am saddened that anyone would stoop so low. Is this what society has become, a desperate clawing at celebrity by any means in order to go viral. Fame at any cost?
